Miss Betty Woodpecker

If you don't know her, she is quite small. She loves worms, but hates it when they hide in the trees. So Miss Betty has to peck, peck and peck to get the worm. Her pecking makes so much noise that everyone hates it. Her feathers are so colourful that she is like a peacock. She loves to say 'peck!peck!peck!'

Mr Squidhead

Mr Squidhead always gets things done wrongly. He always has a bad habit of wearing his spectacle upside down. Every morning, he wakes up with a bunch of messy hair and always trips over his cupboard even if its always there. No wonder his name is Mr Squidhead.

Mr Squidhead

Mr Squidhead was a fussy fisherman. He smelled like raw seafood. He hunted squids with his barnacle covered ship. He could have retired, but he did not want to,and his customers had the same thought. His scaly arms were rough and unpleasant to see. But everybody seemed to like him more than me. If you have never seen him before, go to the coast and if you see a ship called 'Barnacles' gliding around, you know he is here.

Miss Betty Woodpecker

Miss Betty Woodpecker is the best lawyer because the way she talks is similar to a machine gun. Her talking is as loud too. She can scold ten children with perfect pronounciation in one minute. That is why she is nicknamed Woodpecker.  Her mouth is shaped like a beak and most of all, she owns a pet woodpecker.

Miss Betty Woodpecker

The sound of the wood pecking startled me. As I tiptoed to the window, the sound became louder and louder. When I peered over the window, I saw the lucious read flowers and white feathers. Seeing that, I thought it was a wrongly killed women. As I mustered my courage, I peered out again, to my horror, it disappeared. Just as I felt the wind blew, it turned my head and saw the ‘ghost’. To my surprise, it was just Miss Betty the Woodpecker.

Tom Egghead

Tom Egghead was a special man. His sphere-like head shone brighter than a diamond. Being bald was great for him to look cool but a simple fall would break his crown. It is no wonder he is called Egghead.

Week 9 - Reexamining Characterisation

Dear students,

For the lesson this week, we will revisit our techniques of characterisation and use the web-based grammar database, Grammarly@edu to aid us in checking our grammar in our writing. More details will be revealed during the lesson. This is the material that will be used for the lesson:

The Big Friendly Giant

If you did not know him well, he was a stern and serious man. But he was actually a wildly funny person. What made him appear so serious was the fact that he never smiled with his mouth. He did it all with his eyes. He had brilliant blue eyes and when he thought of something funny, his eyes would flash and if you looked carefully, you could actually see a tiny little golden spark dancing in the middle of each eye. But the mouth never moved.

I was glad my father was an eye-smiler. It meant he never gave me a fake smile, because it is impossible to make your eyes twinkle if you are not feeling twinkly yourself.  A mouth-smile is different. You can fake a mouth-smile any time you want, simply by moving your lips. I’ve also learned that a real mouth-smile always has an eye-smile to go with it, so watch out, when someone smiles at you with his mouth but the eyes stay the same. It is sure to be bogus.

Mr Victor Hazell

Mr Victor Hazell was a roaring snob and he tried desperately to get in with what he believed were the right kind of people. He hunted with the hounds and have shooting parties and wore fancy waistcoats. Every weekday, he drove his enormous silver Rolls-Royce past our filling station on his way to the brewery. As he flashed by, we would sometimes catch a glimpse of the great glistening beery face above the wheel, pink as a ham, all soft and inflamed from drinking too much beer.

Doctor Spencer

Doctor Spencer had been looking after the people of our district for nearly forty-five years. He was over seventy now and could have retired long ago, but he did not want to retire and his patients did not want him to either. He was a tiny man with tiny hands and feet and a tiny round face. The face was as brown and wrinkled as a shrivelled apple. Nobody feared him. Many people loved him, and he was especially gentle with children.

Thank you and see you later.
